Post 6: A Modern Song vs The Wife of bath

Now when I think of "The Wife of Bath", I think of the song "Pony", by Ginuwine. If the song is unknown to the reader i will provide the lyrics here, but I suggest listening to it.

This song just exudes the theme of the "The Wife of Bath". In "Pony" it reads, "I'm looking for a partner. Someone who knows how to ride, without even falling off." As we can see both Ginuwine and and the wife of Bath both enjoy sex, and both require to have a partner who knows what they are doing. Unlike Ginuwine, who states he is a bachelor who needs a woman compatible to him, the wife of bath was married five times and didn't care if they got along as long as she was pleasured.

Though the story, "The Wife of Bath", would have been considered overtly sexual back then, now it wouldn't even touch "50 Shades of Grey" In today's society to over sexualize something takes a lot of work. Though Ginuwine sings that he will "Send chills up and down your spine" and "Juices flowing down your thigh" we will still allow our children to sing things like that. Sex has become something more than a pleasure. We don't really see sex as an immoral thing as we once did, but now as an object. To think that the story of this woman would have probably been somewhat considered porn is dumbfounding. Especially because we sing songs that are porn in there own right, and we don't even bat an eye.

  1. You're right, Pony accurately describes The Wife of Bath. Society today doesn't hold sex to the prominent state and status it once held. Marriage use to be one of the only ways to get sex, but now sex is an everyday topic.

  2. Probably one of the most comparable songs you could have picked because it literally says in the book that, "She rode an ambling horse comfortably."

I like your song choice and how you compared it to the story. Like the Wife of Bath, the girl he's talking about in the song has to have confidence and know what she's doing!

  3. Pony is a great song to compare to wife of bath!! I am familiar with the song as well and it clearly paints a vivid picture. He says My saddle's waiting, come and jump on it as well!! This was definitely a great choice of song.

  4. Pony was a great comparison. If you really think about it the way he talked about sex in the song makes you think about The Wife of Bath and how she rode that horse.

  5. This was a great post. "Pony" fit in various ways and painted a modern day picture of her. In todays' society she would be considered promiscuous but most people would find her actions common. The would also be another fitting song "Promiscuous" by Nelly Furtado. Her love for sex would not longer be looked down upon or shocking. Her desire for passion would be inviting by many.

  6. I think Genuwine was first introduced to alot of 90's babies who really didnt understand the song and thought that he was actually talking about a pony. Though I have always enjoyed songs that expressed sexuality between a man and a woman. Although this song is great for "The Wife of Bath" men have all given their private parts a name and Genuwines just happen to be "Pony".
